 Some genius spider stitched these leaves together.   Extended deer season hiker safety = Punky Brewster style points.   
   Some sort of insect case.   Carpinus caroliniana, which I've always called musclewood and it is occasionally called hornbeam or ironwood.

Wow Sarah. The snow looks as though it is so light. You can see individual flakes. The picture that is just before the last one is so interesting. I feel a little off balance looking at it. What is up and what is down? I also Hear the quietness of the woods in these pictures. Thank you for sharing.

what is the blocky barked tree? is the red painted block a boundary or a no hunting marker-great!
